Seven Deadly Sins – Sloth

This entry is part 2 of 7 in the series Seven Deadly Sins

Thaasophobics, never fear! We did a lot of work looking at sloth (and sloths!), idleness, apathy, avolition, aboulia and laziness! The result is here for your enjoyment and disgust.

Music: Lazy River by Louis Prima

Less of Two Evils: Sloth vs. Gluttony. Which way would you rather die: By eating yourself to death or by doing nothing but playing video games until you died? Tell us in the comments!

  1. You talked a lot about sleep but didn’t mention it in the phobia sections. The fear of sleep is somniphobia or hypnophobia.

The current record for standing still is 30:12 hrs set by Akshinthala Seshu Babu of India in 2003.

The Irish actor/comedian from Black Books is Dylan Moran and is hilarious if you get a chance to catch his stand up special.

Finally, you missed the biggest Sloth of them all: Jabba The Hutt! No wonder your sponsor left!

    1. In the “restored scene” in A New Hope, Jabba the Hutt is mobile and active. Hardly slothful!

We see later on in Return of the Jedi that he’s simply gotten too fat to move around well so he fits Gluttony better.

  2. As for me… why can’t you do both? Total sloth and total gluttony! The best of both worlds?

  4. On the notion of addiction to gaming, and the internet in general:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_addiction_disorder

Down the bottom under ‘treatments’ there is mention of the boot camps set up in China (privately run, I think) where you can send your kids to go cold turkey – mind you, the practice has been linked to at least one death.

Also in South Korea (and I’m not sure things are that cheap there, compared with North America), and very much in the worst things to happen, last year a 3mo child died from malnutrition because its parents were playing computer games: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/03/06/2838289.htm

Very, very sad, and it appears a real problem, whether or not the DSM can figure out a way to diagnose it precisely (or express a diagnosis).

  6. On the topic of World of Warcraft, when I was in high school I used to regularly stay up for 3 days straight to play. One summer I took a break after 2 days to walk somewhere and legitimately wondered where my mount bar was because I was tired of walking. That instance, coupled with the anorexia I had developed (also due to WoW), is what led me to quit. The immersion was so severe I forgot I was hungry or hadn’t eaten in a few days. Never went as far as to poop sock or pee bottle though, my bathroom was right next to my computer station.
