About

By Joe

Caustic Soda is a weekly podcast about science, horrible news and humor hosted by Toren Atkinson, Kevin Leeson and Joe Fulgham. Each episode of Caustic Soda takes a gruesome, gory or otherwise horrible topic, such as shark attacks, parasites and radiation, and breaks it down into an easily-digestible bubbling paste of funny!  The hosts discuss the topic’s origins, recent news and pop culture.

It’s hard science by soft people!

Guys: The podcast is a breath of freshh air in a stressful world. I especially enjoyed your food podcast. How about an episode on haunted historical buildings? Is it a marketing gimmic or the real deal?

    Cheers,
    Kelli

Hey guys, keep up the good work. A couple of related podcast ideas: asphyxiation (how many people have died choking on fish bones?), or drowning (Chinese water torture, etc).

  11. Devon says:

Hey Caustic Soda folk! You should do a combo episode with Speedway Squad. Some names could be Caustic Squad, Speedway Soda, Caustic Speedway or Soda Squad.
    Still love your stuff!!!!!

  12. Matt Harmeson says:

Great ending to the Seven Deadly Sins series! Mucho appreciado gentlemen, tres bon.

It seems like everyone is posting show ideas so here’s mine:

The bullshit world of psudo-science (homeopathy, reflexology, healing jewelery, etc).

  13. MissionBrown says:

Really enjoyed the show, I’ve run out now have to wait til next week!

Anyway, I searched for it, but didn’t find any transcriptions of the shows.
Do you guys plan on adding that feature to the site?

Love the show just started listening a couple of months ago, and now I’m hooked. You guys make Mondays a little easier to take.

unfortunately I missed the thickets at the rickshaw …anymore shows coming up? although i think i heard Toren say your drummer is injured.

  16. metalEVE says:

OMG Love the show (Fav episode is still ‘Cannibalism’ but the ‘Psycho Therapy’ one comes close) and have spent many nights listening to a few episodes instead of studying LOL.

Just a suggestion for your “Evil Men In History” series : Shiro Ishii, Commander of Unit 731 (I would definitely consider him to be worse than Hitler, as improbably as that sounds!!!)

Can’t wait to hear what you guys cover next!

  17. Jeff Baillie says:

big fan of your guys podcast… listened to about 5 shows and realized who you were and where you are from… i think we have some common friends… Linda Siemens, Tara Dixon, Chris West and probably more… Keep up the good work… Awesome stuff!!!

I know this isn’t the proper place for this and I’m sorry but I just saw a documentary about feral children and I thought of you guys. I need more info about them and I hope when you guys start scraping the barrel for ideas you might use mine? Maybe?

  20. Karlin Leshchyshyn says:

    Hey Caustic Soda!

You’re stuff makes my work day go by a lot faster! Can’t get enough of it! Monday mornings are my new Christmas! Keep up the awesome work and thanks for the hours of entertainment!

An episode on Torture would be fun…as fun as torture is…Especially if you’re talking Tower of London and old timesey English torture. They knew how to get stuff done! :P

  21. Ümlautman! says:

A colleague at my office told me about your podcast, and now I am hooked and it only took 1 episode. Caustic soda = aural crack

But it was while riding the S-Bahn today that I realized you are from my old ‘hood, way cool. Keep up the good work!

Ümlautman: understood by few, master of even less

  22. Drhoz says:

Love the podcast, and gleefully share it around with other like-minded persons ( i.e. people with a very black sense of humour XD )

On the off chance you don’t already have one planned, may I suggest fungal diseases? For spectacular awful you’ve got the late Mark Tatum, who lost most of his face to a Mucor infection (and I do mean *most of his face, deep into the skull* ), and other such fun diseases as Madura Foot ( what colour would you like the pus today?) , and Schizophyllum commune (a mushroom that *normally* eats wood, but sometimes eats your brain, and has 28,000 sexes ) and so on?

  23. Keeffer says:

love the idea for haunted historical buildings as well as torture. also would recommend lost civilizations/cities, patents (there HAVE to be good patent fight stories) and mummification.

  24. Johnny b Goode says:

Hey guys, I’m a big fan of the podcast and a Vancouver boy. The show on dystopias was great, but I wish you hadn’t glossed over Brave New World and Catch-22 like that, esp. with a writer like Larry as a guest.

As for a show suggestion, how about the grosser/weirder side of sports? Think injuries like Clint Malarchuck getting brutally sliced by a skate blade, Doc Ellis pitching a no-hitter in ’70 on LSD, the effects of repeated concussions on atheletes’ minds, etc. There’s no end of strange and morbid stuff to choose from. Even if you guys don’t follow sports at all, the Caustic Soda perspective on it would be funny as hell.

    • Toren says:

We only had so much time at VCON so we had to pick our battles.

Sports injuries is definitely on the Big List of Episodes To Be, thanks for the suggestions

  25. Harry says:

Why don’t you have ALL the episodes on the RSS feed? I have to manually download from episode 1 to the “Pride” episode instead of getting my podcast manager to do it for me.

    • Joe says:

Our RSS file is too big for FeedBurner if we have over about 60 entries in it so it had to get trimmed.

We’re looking into a few solutions to make it easier to get older episodes. A Season 1 torrent, maybe?

  26. Alex says:

    Hi Guys!
Thank you for an awesome podcast!
Do you have plans to talk about “alien races”? ( see for ex. http://www.thewatcherfiles.com/alien_races.html) There were very interesting encounters in Canada. In Prairies a guy was attacked by a UFO, in Montreal about 10 yrs ago a bunch of people, including policemen, saw a giant UFO in the sky, etc.
Anyway, you are doing great job!
    Alex

  27. MikeHz says:

I love the show, and am almost caught up on it. Every episode is a blast.

If you ever run short on ideas, maybe Caustic Soda should do an actual show about caustic soda— good old sodium hydroxide (NaOH), otherwise known as lye. I’ve worked around plenty of it, and it is nasty stuff. It’s heavily used in industry as a solvent, and has the sometimes handy talent of being able to dissolve flesh.

From Wikipedia: “This process involved placing a carcass into a sealed chamber, then adding a mixture of sodium hydroxide and water (which breaks the chemical bonds that keep the flesh intact). This eventually turns the body into a coffee-like[11][12] liquid, and the only solid that remains are bone hulls, which could be crushed between one’s fingertips.[13] Sodium hydroxide is frequently used in the process of decomposing roadkill dumped in landfills by animal disposal contractors.”

I’ve gotten it on my skin many times, but only in small doses. It causes chemical burns. The first sign of it being on you is that the skin feels slick. Then, it turns red and starts to slough off. There isn’t any burning sensation. The reason for this is that the chemical burns away the nerve endings, so you don’t actually feel the damage being done.

Many people have been badly hurt using this common chemical. A co-worker of mine ended up in the hospital after getting a face full of hot water and caustic. He left the job with a medical disability as a result, permanently scarred. You can see pictures of the damage it does on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caustic_soda#Food_preparation

  28. Duncan says:

Absolutely love the show. I listen on my ipod at work and I’d like to be able to catch up on the older episodes. Is there a way to download these older episodes? Itunes only goes back to the Sex II episode, and the effing firewall at my work won’t let me access your website.
Thanks, and keep up the great work,
    Duncan
