Princess Mononoke was not made to be a little kids' movie. Neither was Porco Rosso or PomPoko. Although lot of Ghibli films have universal appeal, some of their titles are purposely more focused toward one demographic.

In answer to a question asked during the podcast, yes, cephalopod ink has been used as actual writing ink for thousands of years. Pop culture reference, in the John Irving book, Widow for a Year, the main character, who is an author, uses squid ink for his children's books. I believe that the ink went rancid at one point in the book. Excellent book and an excellent movie, The Door in the Floor, was based on part of the book. Nothing to do with tentacles, though.

A 10 year old British girl, Tilly Smith, was vacationing with her parents in Indonesia when the earthquake hit. A few weeks before, her science teacher had taught her class about tsunamis and the warning signs of an approaching tsunami. She recognized the signs, told her parents, and her parents told the hotel staff. Everybody was safely evacuated before the tsunami hit. She saved over a hundred lives. Asteroid 20002 Tillysmith is named in her honor.

In the first episode of the short lived series Kolchak: the Night Stalker, while investigating a series of serial killings, Kolchak discovers the killer to be Jack the Ripper. Jack is portrayed as super strong, bullet proof, and is able to fight off dozens of police officers at once. Through his research, Kolchak theories that Jack is over 130 years old, and the only way to kill him is a severe electric shock.

Mew-nami! Genius! I would suggest what happened to Joe during the break was a Poo-nami. Anyway...

Disclaimer: I know this isn't even remotely accurate but it was kind of a fun exercise.

So I got a bit bored and calculated the volume of tears shed at the worst Tsunami. Joe estimated one million people were crying. I found an estimate that the average person cries 121 pints during their lifetime. It was a british stat so I got the average life expectancy of a Brit which was apparently 80 years. I then worked out that approximately a person would cry 0.0007 ounces in an hour. I then multiplied that by one million. We're looking at 1,350 gallons of tears shed!

More seriously, things you may have discussed but got edited out...

Alaska has a tendency to get hit with Tsunamis. The worst was the Megatsunami that destroyed Lituya Bay, which it turns out, is the "highest recorded megatsunami and the largest known in modern times"

Finally, if you want a good Tsunami film, you might want to check out Tsunami: The Aftermath. It's an HBO film about the 'tsunami that devastated the coast of Thailand two years ago'. Great cast. Might make up for Roland Emmerich.

I enjoyed PONYO, but it was very "kiddy", unlike PRINCESS MONONOKE and SPIRITED AWAY, which can also be enjoyed by adults. Also, I keep hearing Ponyo is meant to be a goldfish, but I think this may be a translation error- she does not look like a fish, but looks and behaves more like a Clione (Sea Angel).

Love THE ABYSS in its uncut form- though I wouldn't like to work for Mr Cameron!

I can't even think of one line that I laughed at or even appreciated. A friend insists "there are two laughter-worthy jokes in Little Nicky" but he hasn't told me which it is.

The product placement was not "the joke". There was no making fun of it and it was presented as blatantly as possible. If you want product placement done tongue-in-cheek properly watch "Josie and the Pussycats". That movie was funny, and engaging, and didn't take itself too seriously. The opening scenes with "Du Jour" are funnier than anything in Little Nicky.

Joe, man... how can you be so totally wrong about Little Nicky? By all means, yes, fuck Adam Sandler, but Little Nicky is the only thing he's made that's actually more or less watchable. Yes, the product placement is ludicrous... that's the joke. Somebody is paying them money to have the son of the devil say stuff about their products that they'll never be able to use promotionally with a straight face. That's flat-out magnificent, as is Henry Winkler's absurd cameo. Sure, there's also stuff that would have been unfunny even when you were 13, but there's just enough good material that I've actually had days when I've thought "You know what I want to watch tonight? Adam Sandler throwing rainbows at people."

That said, I also think there's enough good stuff in Dirty Work to make it almost salvageable.

Love this episode, and i have to really disagree with Joe about Little Nicky. its funny as hell!! It wasn't the best movie ever but it was funny. Granted it was a big sell out movie, but i was entertained, it had a good soundtrack. And Kevin i gotta say HAHAHAHA because you were scared by Paranormal Activity. HOW were you scared?! i laughed my way through it. What's you're take on the scene in Evil Dead 2 where Bruce Campbell and all the animal heads started laughing maniacally, for me it was the best scene.

Just getting around to this episode now:

1. Lizzy Borden - one of the reasons they were able to acquit her, despite the evidence, is that by some statistical anomaly there was another axe murder in the vicinity, so it held up her claims of an intruder (despite the doors all being locked from the inside and the intruder having to hide somewhere for an hour and a half between murdering the step mother and the father.)

2. What about the Axe gang from Kung Fu Hustle? The best dancing axe murderers I've ever seen.

This was a fantastic episode. Demons seem to appear in fiction and non-fiction in our cuture so much, it is quite startling, and it was great to learn about the mythology from a non-religious angle.
By the way, there is another film (that slipped passed your gaze) with demons in it that was relatively recent, Denzel Washington's 1998 film "Fallen." The fallen angel Azazel jumps from person to person (pursued by a police officer) committing crimes and leaving the individual to face the punishment--a really great flick--although a bit too much like the Kyle MacLachlan film 'The Hidden' (1987).

By the way, there is another film (that slipped passed your gaze) with demons in it that was relatively recent, Denzel Washington’s 1998 film “Fallen.” The fallen angel Azazel jumps from person to person (pursued by a police officer) committing crimes and leaving the individual to face the punishment–a really great flick–although a bit too much like the Kyle MacLachlan film ‘The Hidden’ (1987).

Finally, I’m really impressed with Caustic Soda and the way it is evolving, and can’t wait for more episodes!

I know this is late. "That Mitchel and Webb Look" season 3 episode 4 has a great homeopathy sketch. It ends showing homeopathic lager.

Found it odd that the day I listen to the Demon podcast that "Golden Child" is on my T.V. I'll skip watching it because as the boys said it's a shitty film.

In case you're interested, the Fall Guy series sounds similar to a late 90s/early 00s British series called Jonathan Creek (starring Alan Davies) about a magician's assistant who is very good at solving crimes. Great show, very clever and funny in that understated British way. :)

Ghastly topic but clearly well researched. Well done guys. Initially I was a bit annoyed you weren't clearer about what happened to those sent out of the cities, but that stopped when you described S21.
Only negative is the intro music. Your original (the Bam one) is great because it's so short and punchy; the Muppet one is just awesome; this one was just way too long and not particularly interesting. Full marks otherwise. :)

Great ep guys! Only listened to 20 mins so far but thought I would share that your comments about sacrificing human excrement filled my mind with a rather gory scene of Mr Hanky being dismembered. Oh, and the rest of the instructions sounded like they'd been lifted straight from Buffy and Charmed! Hmm, maybe those shows we're just incredibly accurate.
There was a great scene in Ghostbusters with a succubus too (in case that wasn't mentioned).
Well done!

I thought one of you guys was a fan of the Hellblazer comic series? There's interesting and new demons in almost every issue. (Yuppie demons, anyone?) Dangerous Habits is the most famous of the stories, but I found one called 'All His Engines' still more interesting.

"Constantine unwittingly steps into a war between gods, most notably Mictlantecuhtli, the Aztec deity of death, who resents Constantine's intrusion into his business, and Beroul, a demon who behaves as if he were a Hollywood movie executive, holds hostage the soul of Chas' granddaughter Trish."

Also, you didn't want to talk about the Balrog? He's probably number two in a list of most influential demons. I remember finding it funny how D&D's Balor are a straight up copy of the Balrog. I know most of D&D's original content was just an adaption of Tolkein's work, but it always struck me how blatant that specific bit was.

Finally - I remember hearing about a potentially funny film titled "Rare Exports." It's set in Norway, where they unearth a buried and frozen Santa Claus. It turns out he's a demon, or something comparable.

I wasn't sure if I should post this in "Axes of Evil" or the Cannibalism episode, but how is this for In the News?

A guy in Connecticut is being held on US$1 million bond for allegedly murdering a homeless man with an ax and then eating part of the body. From the Connecticut Post:

I just caught this in my national news feed. Anybody else notice this?

Also, I recall a low budget "horror" movie from the 80's disguised as a cop film. There was a serial rapist/killer running around LA, who turned out to be an incubus. I recall a LOT of chit-chat about the quality and quantity of the rapist's sperm.

As Gavin pointed out, Ngor was murdered in '96. The murder created a mini legacy of conspiracy theories - some say it was a bungled mugging, others say it was a PP ordered hit.

His own story before escaping Cambodia is pretty sad. He was imprisoned with his pregnant wife, but she died giving birth - despite being a Gynecologist, he couldn't reveal his training otherwise they'd all die. But she ran into complications and died. You'd have to imagine that'll tear at a man's soul for life.

To throw out another pop culture reference - Vernor Vinge's novel 'A Deepness in the Sky' prominently features mind control. It's one of the finest sci fi novels I have ever read.

On the other hand, I don't know if you guys count novels as popular culture.

There's the film "The Fall" by Tarsem Singh wherein the main character is a stuntman in the hospital after a failed stunt broke his back. The movie is about him telling a little girl stories. It's beautiful and worth a watch if only to see it because it's brilliant!

There's another movie with demons in it and a Tangerine Dream score, L'Inferno, a 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro.

Here, have some Etruscan fiends and bearded snakes:

Absolutely love the show. I listen on my ipod at work and I'd like to be able to catch up on the older episodes. Is there a way to download these older episodes? Itunes only goes back to the Sex II episode, and the effing firewall at my work won't let me access your website.
Thanks, and keep up the great work,

More talking about D&D! At least name drop Juiblex! Best demon lord ever!

Just for clarification, D&D bowed to pressure from Christian Groups to remove devils and demons from the game. Devils became Baatezu and represented law. Demons became Tanar'ri and represented chaos.

There will definitely be an EXORCISMS episode, so we had to keep it in the hopper for that one. Stay tuned, though, it's on the list.

I like how "Little Nicky" doesn't even deserve to be listed/rated under Movies on this page...
Did I miss it or did you actually not mention The Exorcist? Or are you just keeping that for the "Exorcisms" episode?

Hello, it sounds like "Curse of the Demon" was inspired by the short story "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James. You can (and should) read it in part 2 of this http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8486
Or listen to an audio version here (3rd story) :

btw- back in Catholic school, we were taught that "demon" meant "wise one" and that demons were created due to the rebel angels falling from Heaven with Lucifer after he became prideful and jealous when God created Humans and gave us free will.
Ace episode guys!

I enjoyed some of THE KEEP, but once the demon turned up as a guy in a dodgy rubber suit, it got rather Meh.

I think my favourite demon-related movie is PUMPKINHEAD, a 1989 horror flick directed by FX maestro Stan Winston (ALIENS, TERMINATOR, PREDATOR) that features Lance Henrikson as a father who loses his son in an accident and conjures up the titular demon, a personification of vengeance, to deal with the kids who killed him.

Also love "I of Newton" a hilarious short Eighties TWILIGHT ZONE with Ron Glass (FIREFLY) as a hip demon out to steal the soul of a maths teacher. Glass' t-shirt keeps changing slogans "Hell is a city much like Newark")

This episode reminded me of a story from of the Moth Podcast. It's the account of a woman living in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge and the refugee camp afterwards. Sorry for the round about link, but I couldn't find it in the Moth's archives.

I had heard there were one or two fatalities in Ben-Hur's chariot race, but subsequent investigation makes this look more like an urban legend.

Also, you guys expressed some confusion about performers being a 'triple threat'. I've been working in theatre for a long time and in my experience that refers to someone who's talented at Acting, Singing, and Dancing. Assuming it's the same for film, dancing was the part you couldn't remember.

This was an awesome episode guys. I enjoyed it a lot.

I'm also left wondering… did you guys examine the 15th-17th century explorations of the new world when considering this? Or African expeditions? I don't know much about them, but it seems like there must have been some doomed explorations there.

Perhaps you could have counted Roanoke, despite being a colonization expedition.

Great show guys!
I've finally *almost* made it through the backlog! An excellent song to do with expeditions in general is "Northwest Passage" by Stan Rodgers. It's all about him wanting to retrace the steps of the great explorers, and is just steeped in Canadiany goodness.
Keep up the good work guys!

A video of Christer Pettersson, (possibly the assassin of Olof Palme), singing "Rövarvisan" (The robber song), a famous children's song in Sweden. Christer was actually consireded a promising actor in his youth, regarded as "the best student ever" by his drama teacher, before alcohol and drugs detroyed his life. There's loads of videos of Christer on youtube. He's sort of a legend in Sweden because of his strange behaviour and many weird tv-appearances in the 90's. He would admit the murder of Palme to the reporters one week and then go on a drunken rant the next week and take it back. Also, he killed a guy with a screwdriver in the 70's and was convicted (I think) of manslaughter.

Two pop culture references, besides the Killing Fields:

Swimming to Cambodia - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094089/

Eddie Izzard on evil "mass mudering fuckheads" -

"But there were other mass murderers that got away with it! Stalin killed many millions, died in his bed, well done there; Pol Pot killed 1.7 million Cambodians, died under house arrest at age 72, well done indeed! And the reason we let them get away with it is because they killed their own people, and we're sort of fine with that. “Ah, help yourself,” you know? “We've been trying to kill you for ages!” So kill your own people, right on there. Seems to be… Hitler killed people next door... “Oh… stupid man!” After a couple of years, we won't stand for that, will we?"

I love the show, and am almost caught up on it. Every episode is a blast.

If you ever run short on ideas, maybe Caustic Soda should do an actual show about caustic soda— good old sodium hydroxide (NaOH), otherwise known as lye. I’ve worked around plenty of it, and it is nasty stuff. It’s heavily used in industry as a solvent, and has the sometimes handy talent of being able to dissolve flesh.

From Wikipedia: “This process involved placing a carcass into a sealed chamber, then adding a mixture of sodium hydroxide and water (which breaks the chemical bonds that keep the flesh intact). This eventually turns the body into a coffee-like[11][12] liquid, and the only solid that remains are bone hulls, which could be crushed between one's fingertips.[13] Sodium hydroxide is frequently used in the process of decomposing roadkill dumped in landfills by animal disposal contractors.”

I’ve gotten it on my skin many times, but only in small doses. It causes chemical burns. The first sign of it being on you is that the skin feels slick. Then, it turns red and starts to slough off. There isn’t any burning sensation. The reason for this is that the chemical burns away the nerve endings, so you don’t actually feel the damage being done.

Many people have been badly hurt using this common chemical. A co-worker of mine ended up in the hospital after getting a face full of hot water and caustic. He left the job with a medical disability as a result, permanently scarred. You can see pictures of the damage it does on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caustic_soda#Food_preparation

One of the images I remember clearly from the killing fields is a five year old coming in with a group of Khmer Rouge, and the little child takes a position, holds up his AK-47, and sights it at the main characters of the film. It was very poignant.

I also a recall a scene later, while Dr. Haing Ngor is captured… a child comes by and rips of several plants that he had managed to grow outside his hut. Dr. Haing is very penitent in that "please don't kill me" way to the child… but I don't remember understanding what the complaint was. The growing of plants seems acceptable according to the agrarian party line you talked about. Did you guys catch the reason? (I think this might have been while famine was going on, as well.)

Pol Pot showed up in the sadly foreshortened comic series The Exterminators, under his real name of Saloth Sar, working for the Bug-Be-Gone agency as an in-house scientist.

The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato, the Mexican mummies you spoke of, spent some time in Detroit a couple of winters ago. They are really wondrous to behold, since they were not specifically prepared. They are wearing their peasant clothes, military uniforms... whatever they had, and they range from landowners to field hands, babies and bruja.

My favorite was easily the hall of infants.

I did a little write-up and photoset here:

Great episode - loved the new intro (especially the bait-and-switch). I've always wondered about Pol Pot and his reign on terror, and this was a LOT easier than doing any work and researching it. Now I need to go re-watch The Killing Fields, as the movie was powerful when I was younger, but the context wasn't clear.

One quick comment about polecats: the European polecat is far more closely related to the domestic ferret (to the point of possibly being the genesis of the modern domestic ferret), whereas the skunk has now been classified into it's own family, after comparing the genetic evidence.
